A 3 week design sprint for first year students taking DESIGN 101 in the design program at Waipapa Taumata Rau, The University of Auckland.
Design brief:
Vibrating the air and the small bones inside of our heads
Undertake an iterative design process resulting in the creation of a musical instrument made from discarded/waste material.
Research the sonic, ergonomic, and aesthetic potentials of various waste materials. Documenting and annotating all material explorations on your blog.
Develop and refine the musical instrument, taking a wide range of considerations into account: Is it worn, hand held, where are the handles? Does it have a carry case or box? Does it have branding? Logo? How is it played? How is it experienced by an audience? Does the audience play it?
Make a video of your final instrument that shows off the way that the instrument looks and sounds. (This could be: A music video, a promotional video, a video showing the technical aspects of the instrument or any other kind of creative video output).
Make a 1 – 2 page bespoke musical score which has a visual and sonic relationship specific to your instrument.
