Reading Group: Living, Making Together 3
Thursdays 10, 17 & 23 March 2022, 6-8pm
Weekly gatherings on livelihood, how we relate to each other and other beings on this planet, and forms of self-organisation. The discussion will focus on working out ways that the ideas can be practiced in our daily lives, to try things out before dismissing them. Initiated by Xin Cheng and Adam Ben-Dror, we also welcome suggestions and co-hosting by you. We will be reading, tasting and experiencing an unexpected mixture each week, and experimenting with how we can use them in our daily lives.
Workshop: Frugal & Open-Source Computing
Saturday 19 March 2022, 2-4pm // Led by Walter Langelaar
‘if you can’t open it, you don’t own it’
‘As a society we need to start treating computational resources as finite and precious, to be utilised only when necessary, and as effectively as possible. We need frugal computing: achieving the same results for less energy.’
Join us for an afternoon of tinkering and hacking, repurposing and rewiring broken and disused electronics for future use. Learn more about local computing (like our local network, hosting this website and data) and ways to shorten the distance between you and your cloud.
Learning from Everyday Resourcefulness: design for circularity, disassembly & adaptability
Saturday 26 March 2022, 2-4pm // Led by Xin Cheng & Adam Ben-Dror
A design-sprint/workshop using only materials from local waste-streams. Following Jared Diamond’s idea that ‘tinkering, rather than necessity, is the mother of inventions’, Xin and Adam invite you to join them in following the lead of the materials, adding to and rethinking design objects. Taking inspiration from everyday resourcefulness, the Unix design principles, and acknowledging the value of temporary objects, this workshops encourages a re-evaluation of value: resourcefulness, flexibility, well-being and holistic considerations for all living beings.
